About the Product: The Solar Sidewinder Heating Element (Patent Pending) is a screw-in heat exchanger for electric water heaters. It is a component part of a closed-loop solar water heating system. It is designed to create a hybrid solar-electric hot water tank (or an auxiliary solar hot water tank) out of an existing electric water heater. This product fits most 40, 50, and 80 gallon electric water heaters which utilize screw-in heating elements. Note: This product does not work with gas fired water heaters.
How the Sidewinder works: Within a domestic hot water tank, hot water rises and colder water sinks. Electric water heaters usually have an upper and lower heating element which heat the water throughout the tank. To create a hybrid solar-electric tank, simply use a single sidewinder as a replacement for the lower heating element only. To create an auxiliary solar water tank, simply replace both electric heating elements with a Solar Sidewinder. When heat transfer fluid is circulated through a Solar Sidewinder, the heat from the fluid is transferred directly into the potable water supply of the tank.

Each Sidewinder can be used with a panel up to 13 square feet of insulated solar surface area in climates with high solar insolation. Solar surface area utilized is limited by the probability of overheating the CPVC to near or above 200 F.
